State Approved CNA Programs in New Jersey and its Requirements

CNA in New Jersey

CNA or Certified nursing assistant performs basic health care duties in different medical settings. Becoming a CNA in New Jersey is a cost effective option as it does not involve many expenses. In order to obtain certification, an aspirant must complete a course of Nurse Aide in Long Term Care Facilities Program and Competency Evaluation Program (NATCEP). The programs give a basic knowledge of the skills required and duties to perform the job efficiently.

Regulatory Authority

The department of health serves as the regulatory body for all nursing programs, and a candidate must ensure that the school or the institute he’s enrolling in, fulfills the guideline and criteria of the governing body.

Employers can also check the status of the candidate at the department of health registry before providing any offer letter.

Prerequisite

There are certain requirements that need to be fulfilled to be eligible for pursuing a career as a CNA.

  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • A candidate must hold a valid high school diploma or equivalent GED.
  • Must not have any criminal background.
  • Knowledge of English language and must be able to communicate in the same.
  • Physical examination
  • Negative TB test

New Jersey’ CNA Program Program Duration

The whole program is of minimum 90 hours including 50 hours of classroom session and 40 hours of the clinical or practical session. The classes last for 4 to 8 weeks with a flexible schedule.(1)

After completing the program program, the candidate becomes eligible to take the nurse aid competency exam within 24 months

Examination

The test comprises of two parts:

  • NJ certified nurse aide skill test – 600 minutes
  • NJ certified nurse aide written – 90 minutes

The theory test can be taken on computer but not skill test which is to be performed under the supervision of higher faculties or doctors. In order to get certified, you have to clear both the test.

Certification

Certification process in the New Jersey is very easy. You just need to obtain a passing score in the examination and the state will grant you the certificate and placement on state’s nurse aide registry within 4 weeks.

Cost

The cost for the program varies between $800 to $1600, and the test of examination is further divided into its two parts. The cost for skill test is $23 whereas the cost for written test is $53. For the re-test, you have to pay the whole fees again.

Recertification or Renewal

Your certificate is valid for 2 years from the date of issuance and after that, you need to renew it again to continue working as CNA. To reinstate the certificate, you must have worked as a CNA for at least 7 hours in the licensed health care setting during the 2 years period.

Along with this, you have to submit your biometric data (fingerprints), complete background check and current, valid certificate.

Note: You will receive a renewal notice before 45 days of the expiration of the certificate(2).

Transfer the Certificate

From any Other State to New Jersey

For transferring the certificate from any other state to New Jersey, you must have completed an equivalent program program and competency evolution program as in New Jersey. Along with this, You must:

  • Have a valid and active certificate of the former state.
  • Contact the new jersey’s state nursing board for an application and to know the complete procedure of transfer of the certificate.
  • Complete the form and submit it along with the fee (if any) to the Address provided on the application form.

Other Requirements:

You have to provide your biometric data, generally, fingerprints and must not have criminal cases against you.

From New Jersey to Other State

To transfer the certificate from NJ to any other state, you have to follow the procedures and guidelines of the concerned state. As the transfer requirements are different for different states, you must visit the state’s nurse aide center or National Council of State Board of Nursing website.
